Why aren't Bubbie Books boring looking?
Since launching Bubbie Book, many people have asked a similar question:
“If the goal is to hide your phone… shouldn’t the book be plain or boring so your baby isn’t interested in it?”
It’s a good question, but Bubbie Books aren’t boring for a simple reason. They’re not designed to disguise your phone by being so dull that when your baby sees you using it, they have absolutely no interest in it (depending on your kid’s age, you could be holding the most boring object in the world and they would still want it). They’re designed so that when your baby inevitably sees you using it, it completely blends into their world. They recognize the object you’re holding, and it makes sense to them. (Rather than that handheld box that everyone seems to be staring at).
“Of course they’re looking at that thing with colorful images and funny-looking characters - that’s what people do, including me!” I have no idea what their true inner monologue is, but that’s what I’m going for with Bubbie Book..
Now, this fun-looking design does come with a downside, which I think is where the question comes from. At some point, your baby will be cognitively developed and mobile enough that they're going to start wanting that colorful Bubbie Book, and that’s ok.
Bubbie Book is meant for when your baby is mostly still observing the world, not trying to figure it out. Once your baby is developed enough that they start using some real reasoning to figure out that it’s not a real book, it has probably outlived its usefulness.
If we made a boring-looking book, could we squeeze out a couple more months before kids really started catching on? Probably - but it’s a losing battle. Instead of trying to outsmart a future toddler, we are more focused on giving your baby a phone-free introduction to the world, for however long that lasts.
